High Elevation Bordeaux Have a Name

2016 marks the beginning of the fourth vintage I've been working with the vineyard. Elephant Mountain is unique because it sits above the Missoula flood plain in Washington's Yakima Valley at 1300-1465ft. The soils are thin yet consistent, and heat accumulation is perfect for bordeaux at 3500 GDDs annually. Even in the last three hot, hotter and hottest vintages we've had less that 5 days annually above 100F. This vineyard boasts no fans for frost protection and a frost free season averaging 30 days longer than the lower parts of the Yakima Valley.

A Surprisingly Unique Site for Elegant Rhone Varietals

Sugarloaf Vineyard sits at the top of the Missoula flood plain in Washington's Yakima Valley at 1000-1250ft. This vineyard boasts multiple soil types from river cobble to clay and Warden Silt Loam at the lower elevations. A wind driven terroir that includes direct West facing slopes and a 45 degree row orientation to balance the effect of the hot afternoons on the fruit during the warmest parts of the season. Dialing in at 3800 GDDs each season, it is well suited to long season varieties that need a little extra heat for the finishing touches.
